Kindergarten

St. Paul School's Kindergarten program offers a complete curriculum designed to help students achieve in First Grade. The students have a full, active day including play, academics, specials, lunch, recess, and rest-time. Social skills are taught and reviewed. Together we pray, work, and play as members of God's family.

Meets Monday – Friday
Students participate in lunch, recess and rest-time
Students are eligible for Latchkey (before & after school care)
Students can join many extracurricular activities including musical theatre.
 

The Kindergarten curriculum 
The St. Paul School curriculum gives students a solid foundation of skills to help them master each subject. Each student learns at his or her own pace. St. Paul offers support for students on both ends of the learning spectrum – those who need additional help and those who need additional challenges.  

Religion

• Kindergarteners learn that they were made by God.
• They learn about love and that loving means helping, sharing, waiting, listening and praying.
• Feelings of happiness, sadness, anger and fear are explored. The children learn that God knows their feelings and that their feelings are okay.
• Special emphasis is placed on the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.

• Students engage in activities which foster excitement for language learning.
• The language arts program integrates a phonics-based reading and writing program.
• Course work includes making connections between print & meaning, and symbols & sounds.
• Students learn to express ideas to others through speaking, emergent writing, and drawings.
• They practice reading/phonics, learn to read, and learn to spell frequently encountered words.

• Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of math in the real world. 
• Students learn to collect, classify, organize and display data.
• They explore geometric terms such as symmetry, curves, lines, circles, and rectangles.
• Students learn appropriate units of measurement, money and time.
• They write numbers through 30, and learn simple addition and subtraction using manipulatives.

• The students learn the five senses within the context of science.
• Students describe and compare motion. They begin to understand forces and changes in motion.
• Through direct classroom experiences of living things and their habitats, students begin to think beyond movement as the defining characteristic of life and recognize characteristics of living things.
• Students identify earth materials and recognize materials necessary for plants to grow.

• The program helps students understand today’s society with the knowledge that history is an ongoing process.  Students learn history, geography, civics, and economics.
• Kindergarteners learn these disciplines through the lens of “My World.”
• In history, students begin to develop a sense of time and chronology using events of their own lives.
• In geography, using their environment, students develop awareness of how geographers use maps.
• In civics, students are introduced to the concept of fairness and making group decisions.
• In government, students explore different symbols of our nation, such as the American flag.
